
Herpetic angina remains a rare form of viral angina, caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV). It affects the pharynx and tonsils, causing painful white blisters that can evolve into ulcerations. Often confused with herpangina (caused by enteroviruses) or bacterial angina, it poses a real differential diagnosis problem, even for practitioners.

The rapid diagnostic test (RDT) used in outpatient medicine targets group A streptococcus. It allows for ruling out bacterial angina but does not provide information about the type of virus involved. Only a virological analysis (PCR on pharyngeal swab) formally identifies HSV-1 or HSV-2. In immunocompromised patients or pregnant women, identifying the virus takes on another dimension.
